Dear Nina,

My sister’s fiance has died, and her heart with him. I’m sure she will heal with time and rebuild herself around her loss. She will never be the same, though, having loved so deeply and lost. I know a bit about that, although in my experience the love was one-sided and he didn’t die. One day I hope that she is more glad than grieved that she had David’s love, and I hope she will once again find solace in her garden.

Her grief echoes in my heart, and my painting shows it. None of this recent work will ever see a gallery, but it is the medicine I need to support Alice.
